Project Glass

Google’s Futuristic Heads-Up-Display

Deep within the infamous Google Labs, comes a concept from the team at “Google[x]” that is so totally awesome that every nerd on the planet -scratch that, the galaxy, has been waiting for, “Project Glass.” Sounds too good to be true, but it’s not! Even Google’s code name “Project Glass” sounds like something out of a spy movie and the fact that Project Glass came from a section within Google named the “Google[x] group” only solidifies my suspicions …that the team at Google[x] is totally awesome!

Google is on the move!

Google strives to be the most innovative search engine / community / social media website / email service provider / documents cloud / daily deal site / browser / wallet / EVERYTHING and Project Glass is no different. Google is always on the move with super-human abilities and the Google Glass Project is designed to do just that, move. Project Glass is the brain child of a team within the Google[x] group. Unfortunately, all of the features and functions are not fully disclosed at this point, but we’ll say we like it already. Google Glass is a pair of glasses that combines HD heads-up-display with voice commands and Google programs. Below is the official Google video for the Glass Project.

This next example of voice combined a pair of Vuzix glasses, HD webcams and mic headset with an application written in Adobe Air. The real magic is in the glasses and they do not disappoint. Vuzix glasses provide hands free access to data and HD video that will bring a whole new world to life! Vuzix is not the only one working towards heads up display glasses perfection. Sunglasses giant Oakley, has been working on the heads up display glasses project for over 15 years and they currently hold over 600 optics related patents. With all of these developments, this technology will become more advanced as time goes on and I can’t wait to see it, pun intended.

Conclusion

Your mission, should you choose to accept it… just kidding. I love the idea of making heads-up-display glasses available to the general public. However, at this point it does not seem to fix any problems, make anything easier and I don’t think the “real world” is ready for them. The world is still coming to grips with the mobile smart phone revolution and I think it will take many years before HD heads-up-display glasses catch on. Do we really need maps and directions displayed on a pair of glasses? Although I think it’s a great innovation –and I can’t wait to get a pair, I don’t see the daily need for such an expense. When (and if) they do become more popular, affordable, and functional, how long will it take before someone performs a case study that shows people wearing heads-up-display glasses are involved in more car accidents and new legislation is passed mandating “eye free driving.” I work for an internet marketing company. And would like to know when will we be able to advertise to the people wearing them? And what happens when someone gets hurt because a Burger King ad starring David Beckham pops up and distracts them? This message will self destruct in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…
